What is thermoforming technology?

Thermoforming is actually a very simple technique. As you can see, the process is very simple. The first step is to open the point, unload the material, and heat the furnace. The temperature is generally around 950 degrees. After heating, it is stamped and formed once, and then cooled. This technology differs from general stamping technology by one more mold.

There is a cooling system inside the mold. It reduces weight because it has increased strength, so weight can be reduced. And it can reduce the number of reinforcement plates in it. For example, the central channel is a channel of the car. We can use thermoforming technology to use the central channel, and some parts such as reinforcement plates can be omitted. Because we are molding at one time, we need a set of molds. At the same time, its molding accuracy is very high. In addition, its collision ability is excellent.

 

Thermoforming is a simple and complex forming process technology. The one-time stamping process is relatively simple compared to the cold stamping multiple forming process: blanking → heating → stamping forming → cooling → mold opening. The key to thermoforming technology is mold design and process design in the production process. The most commonly used materials are BTR165 and Usibor1500. The difference between the two materials is very small. The surface of Usibor1500 is coated with aluminum, while the surface of BTR165 is shot peened.

Some other steel mills can also provide the steel required for hot forming, but the tolerance range is relatively large, which affects product performance. One of the advantages of this process is that the forming time is very short, which is only completed within 25~35s. The strength of parts can be greatly improved through thermoforming technology, for example, the tensile strength of the material can reach 1600MPa. The application of ultra-high-strength steel plate combined with hot forming technology can reduce the number of reinforcing plates on body parts, thereby reducing the weight of the vehicle body.

Compared with cold forming process, hot forming has excellent formability. Because for cold stamping forming, the higher the material strength, the worse the forming performance, and the greater the springback, which requires multiple processes to complete. The thermoformed material can be easily stamped and formed at one time after being heated at high temperature.

Although compared with cold-formed single parts of the same size, hot-formed parts cost more, but due to the high strength of the hot-formed parts materials, there is no need to strengthen the plate, and there are fewer molds and less processes. Under the premise of the same performance, The whole assembly cost and the saved material cost, thermoformed parts are more economical.

Thermoforming technology is more and more used in automobile bodies. Currently, it is mostly used for door anti-collision panels, front and rear bumpers, A/B pillars, central channels, upper and lower fire panels, etc.
